Just look at the lake and the sun... Today is a great day to be an owner on Island Lake!. The leadership team of the Members of Island Lake Foundation want to thank everyone who paid their $200 per lot so we have been able to cover the costs to date to treat the weeds and more recently, the algae on the lake. The invoices for treatment thus far can be found in the Files section of the Facebook page. More payments are needed for future treatments: if you haven't paid (and we know if you have) please do so now so we can keep the lake looking like it does today.

On Wednesday (8/7/2024), Robb and I were on the lake from about 9-noon as he was treating the algae. Thank you to those who posted areas to treat, and for the appreciation shared in person and in posts since then. Here is a summary from Robb:

"Ginger probably marked the more specific lot #’s but most of the product was concentrated on the West Shoreline with 6 gallons being in the SW Bay and along the south and west shore, ~6 gallons in the next bay north near lot 190 to about 206ish, algae by Kramar’s stretch, 2 gallons by lot 275, and a bunch that was drifting and along shore from lots 208-215 after the strong West wind shift. Everything was headed to the bay near lot 218 after the wind shift when we treated but I hit as much as I could.

The algae will slowly lose its pigment, turn more brown and then will dissipate and fall to the bottom. Natural aerobic bacteria will then consume the dead decaying algae. There will be more algae that will lift off of the bottom when the conditions are favorable but that isn’t something we try and target because it takes way more product and gets costly. There will be still be accumulating algae as we did not get or try to get every little piece floating. Again, it is best to treat when all in the coves and at the surface but each time we are there it seems to change. The algae that was targeted will go away"

I have been assured that the product used is not harmful to humans, pets, or aqua-life other than the targeted algae!

As a reminder, there are things you can and should do to help care for your beach/shoreline and things you should not do:

Also: it appeared to me that Rob Lenzini's crew did some major shoreline cleaning, as have many homeowners. Things are really looking like the lakehouse neighborhood we all hoped we would have!

Enjoy the lake! I know I intend to do so. That means it may be another week before I get back to folks. This week I spent: 2.5+ hours in a MILF meeting on Monday, 3 hours on the lake with Robb on Wed., yesterday we boated to the areas that needed the most treatment to look for progress, and I spent at least 4 hours answering emails, FB posts, etc. this morning. I will not sustain that level of time for this volunteer position. Going forward, please look for information on our website: CPILHOA.com for update from the HOA advisors and manager, and look to the MILF tab on the website (which includes emails for the leadership team) or this FB page. Know that my first priority for responding to lake neighbors is to answer emails, at the email address posted on the website. FB posts and messages are simply too hard to manage with 3+ different FB pages. See ya on the lake!

From Ginger Murray:

ALGAE TREATMENT UPDATE:   Jason Murray and I have been in regular contact with Robb.  He committed to coming to treat the algae this week.  Due to the rain this morning and the nasty storm coming tonight, the treatment must be delayed to be effective.

HOW WEATHER IMPACTS THE TREATMENT FOR ALGAE:   The rain pushes the algae down, and the shifting winds cause the algae blooms to break up and move.  The best opportunity for the treatment to have the desired impact happens when the algae is at the surface and is grouped in specific areas. As things stand, we are planning for him to come on Wednesday.  As a reminder, Robb is treating bodies of water around the state, so we are restricted to time available on his calendar and he is beholden to Mother Nature giving us the weather conditions best suited to allow the treatment to have the best impact.  Updates will be provided when the date/time are solidified.  At that time, it would be very helpful if those of us on the lake can help identify locations where the algae is pervasive.

PLEASE PAY IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY:  An updated list will be posted yet today or tomorrow.  You can make a payment today to get on that list.  One of the many agenda items for the next meeting will be the continued discussion about the limitations for algae treatment due to budget constraints, and specifically what to do when the algae is impacting a homeowner who has yet to pay their $200 contribution to the cause. At this time, payments are voluntary.  There are other options under consideration, which I would prefer to avoid.  Community support is greatly appreciated and allows us to make the decisions that are best for our lake.

Greetings Neighbors:  Here (attached below) is a series of communications with Robb about the weed suppression treatment and other lake quality issues (algae).

Fantastic test results:  the first weed suppression treatment was a success!

Other great news, Members of Island Lake Foundation had our first 4 person exec team meeting last night.  Patti Zaputil will have minutes coming out ASAP, which will be posted here.  Amy VanDyck is taking over collecting/depositing checks... there is now a mail box on our garage (we live next door to Amy) where checks can be dropped off if you prefer that compared to mailing it.  Eric Stridde and I are thrilled to have the help.  Other lakehouse neighbors from other areas of our lake are being contacted to represent their neighborhood as "members at large".

Another update (options to try if the algae by you is present but not pervasive, and what not to bother trying) will be forthcoming.  More about the budget, costs of treatments, how you can help, etc will be posted ASAP.  Please trust we are doing our best to catch up to the rapid growth in our community and the swift changes in the lake!
